1. Who we are

My Study Diary (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a personal study-tracking application operated by Struan, the data controller for the purposes of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

2. What data we collect

  • Account data: email address and a hashed password (only if you create an account).
  • Study data: subjects, goals, exam dates, session timestamps, durations, focus scores, and any notes you choose to write.
  • Technical data: standard server logs (IP address, browser type, timestamps) retained briefly for security and debugging.

We do not collect special-category data, payment information, or use third-party advertising or analytics trackers.

3. Why we use your data (legal basis)

  • Contract (Art. 6(1)(b) UK GDPR): to provide the MySD service you signed up for.
  • Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)): to keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
  • Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)): for any optional features you explicitly opt in to.

4. Where your data lives

If you use My Study Diary without an account, all your data stays in your browser's local storage and is never transmitted to our servers.

If you create an account, your data is stored in a PostgreSQL database operated by Supabase Inc. (our processor) on servers located in the European Union. Row-Level Security ensures no other user can access your data.

5. Your rights under UK GDPR

You have the right to:

  • Access a copy of your personal data (Art. 15).
  • Correct inaccurate data (Art. 16).
  • Erase your data — “right to be forgotten” (Art. 17).
  • Restrict or object to processing (Arts. 18 & 21).
  • Data portability — export your data (Art. 20).
  • Withdraw consent at any time.

You can exercise these directly in the app: click your email at the bottom of the sidebar to export or permanently delete your account and data. For anything else, email [YOUR CONTACT EMAIL].

If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk or call 0303 123 1113.

6. Data retention

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, all your subjects and sessions are permanently removed within 30 days. Backups are rotated within 30 days.

7. Cookies and local storage

My Study Diary uses your browser's local storage to remember your session and (if you're not signed in) to save your study data. These are strictly necessary for the service to function and, under PECR, do not require a consent banner. We do not set tracking or advertising cookies.

8. Children

My Study Diary is not directed at children under 13. If you are under 13, please ask a parent or guardian before using the service.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will reflect any changes. Significant changes will be communicated by email if you have an account.
